Deciding To Get A Family Dog

For convenience, we will refer to your dog as “he” rather than “he or she”.

Previous and present dog owners will have experienced something of the unique bond that can develop between a dog and his owner.  They will also have realized that dog ownership is a long term commitment which carries with it an ongoing and serious responsibility.  Before you decide to get a new dog, whether for the first time or not, you would do well to bear in mind the serious responsibility this will bring.  Before reaching any decision, consider questions such as:

●    Can I afford the financial expense?

Many first time owners are distracted by the purchase price and fail to consider the many secondary and ongoing costs of dog ownership.  For example, various accessories need to be bought, the dog may need to be registered, good food must constantly be provided, perhaps the yard or property will need alteration or attention, and there are bound to be Vet and general health care costs throughout his lifetime.  You may also need to factor in the cost of kenneling the dog when you are away on holidays.

●    What do I expect to gain from owning a dog?

Do you want a dog to guard your property in your absence, or is your main intension to get a pet who will become a member of your home?  Remember that most dogs will make some noise or sound some alarm when someone else approaches your home.  Do you want to show your dog, or enter him in other competitions?

●    Can I supply a suitable environment for the dog I have in mind?

Are my house and grounds large enough for the breed of dog I would like to get?  Are there suitable regions in the neighbourhood, within easy reach of my house, where he could get plenty of exercise?

●    Do I have enough knowledge?

If you will be a first time dog owner, seek good advice about what you are about to take on.  Most new owners are aware that their new dog will require food and water and exercise and toys to play with.  They should also think further ahead and consider the time commitment required and the need for good ongoing training and general health care that is required of every responsible owner.

We wish you every training success and years of enjoyment for both you and your dog.

My name is Julian. I developed this website way back in around 1996 when it originally had the domain name dogtrainingproducts.biz. My father Brian wrote most of the articles himself, but unfortunately he passed in 2023. We had a vision to inspire and help others with their dog training after we owned 2 very naughty Manchester Terrier dogs. This website I keep running as a tribute to him and thanks to all Brian's efforts.
